Irises

Irises come in an astounding number of different varieties, varying in size, colour and appearance. The Iris genus contains over 300 species.

Bearded iris are subdivided into dwarf, intermediate, border and tall forms, getting their name from the thick, bushy “beards” that appear on each of the falls (lower petals) of the flower.

Depending on the type of bearded iris, they can be in bloom as early as March through to late June. Reblooming iris (remontant) even rebloom in late summer and autumn, up to the first frosts.

We dispatch your order, bare-rooted rhizomes, in autumn.

Plant the rhizomes in a sunny position, with the fan facing south in a free draining soil. The rhizome MUST be above the ground. Only water them if the soil is extremely dry or after transplanting. See the 'advise' tab above for a full planting guide.

Don't over-fertilise iris, use a balanced fertiliser, such as 10-10-10,( blood, fish and bone or a weak tomato feed) in spring and again in summer avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that encourage vegetative growth.

These are varieties of Bearded Iris new to the UK that we have sourced from around the world on our travels.

We like to trial new varieties for a few years to make sure that they will cope with the UK climate before introducing them to our range and to ensure that they are true to type.

Importing plants and seeds from overseas, including the EU, is closely monitored and rigorously tested by the government Animal and Plant Health Agency. Our nursery and plants is regularly inspected by APHA to ensure the plants we grow are healthy and virus free.
